MPATH externs spend six months working with the palliative care team for eight hours each week, like any fellow from another discipline.
We understand that, despite being established as a medical specialty in 1990, palliative care remains underutilized in many ways and team sizes and levels of support vary. We want to ensure that our MPATH externs have a robust opportunity to learn about interdisciplinary care and the unique perspective of palliative care.
MPATH requires that externship sites have a palliative care team that consists of at least two dedicated, palliative providers with no less than one year of experience in palliative care. These can be any combination of physician, nurse, nurse practitioner, chaplain, and/or social worker. (If your team has another composition but would like to partner with us as an MPATH externship site, please send an email to [email protected] describing your team’s composition, so we can discuss the possibility of a mutually beneficial partnership.)
To qualify, a program will need an average daily census of no less than eight patients. Patients may be distributed between inpatient, outpatient and/or home-based care, if necessary.
